Walter MCAfee, A Black Man calculated the Speed of the Moon

mOoN

I never really thought about the moon

moving. So I never really thought about

the moon’s speed. But every time I read

black history I learn something new about

my wonderful Black people and additonal

facts. Now, I will move on to the man

who calculated the speed of the moon.

Introducing Walter McAfee:

Walter S. McAfee- A Black man who is a

mathematician was the first to calculate

the speed of the moon. McAfee

was involved in the Project Diana

in the 1940s, a US Army program created

to figure out whether a high

frequency radio signal could

penetrate the earth’s outer

atmosphere.

                          To test this, scientists wanted

to bounce a radar signal off the

moon and back to earth. But the

moon was moving too fast, impossible

to hit without knowing the precise

speed of it.

                  McAfee made the necessary

calculations on January 10, 1946,

the team sent a radar pulse through

a 40 feet antenna towards the moon.

2 and a half seconds after that, they

received a faint signal which showed

that transmission from the earth

could cross vast distances to outer

space.

             Official news of this scientific

breakthrough did not include

McAfee’s name, nor any acknowledement

that he did what he did in his role.

But Americans would have never

walked on the moon without the black

man named MCAfee and his calculations.

I wish more people would talk about

that. I’m going to have a journal full

of black inventors. I keep collected

the facts and learn more and more about

my Black People.
