Chubby Checker bombarding the stage with the dance he invented ,”The twist”!!

Chubby Checker bombarding the stage with the dance he invented ,”The twist”!!

Chubby Checker? Catchy name right? You bet. Well, he
was just as catchy as his name. A name like his is
memorable enough to sell records quick. He would
perform on Philadelphia. He was in a famous ad for Oreo
Cookies.

Born October 3, 1941, he took on jobs like shining
shoes, selling ice and assisting in a butcher’s shop.
His heroes? Only the top best like Fats Domino,
Jerry Lee Lewis, and Elvis Presley made his list.
He performed in church and on the streets in his
singing group, the Quantrells.

The music executives were running to get to him
like people running through Walmart like people
who found out about a 50% discount on laptops.
He signed with Cameo Parkway Records in 1959.
He even came up with a song called “The Twist” .
Also, He was labeled “King of the twist.” What
a calling! Not only that folks, he INVENTED
the dance the Twist. Let’s get down with him.

The twist, as a a dance movement revolutionized
popular culture, giving a smooth transitioning
for couples to break up on the dance floor.

He makes me want to try! Amazing! Count on
Chubby Checkers to zoom into action. Vocal
cords that speak volumes and the feet that
keep the beat…What an amazing man! High
five on his kind of talent.

Frederick Douglass used papers of freed slave to escape slavery!

Frederick Douglass used papers of freed slave to escape slavery!

Frederick Douglass

And who does Frederick Douglass look like, all up in the face? Laurence Fishbourne!
He probably played Douglass in a movie or will in the future! Look out, now!

What’s the most precious thing in life? Freedom! Freedom!
Freedom! That’s why Dr. King says “Free at last, free at last, thank God I’m
free at last”. There’s no amount of money to go to jail for.
Freedom and peace and interlinked. Well, don’t most if not all aggree.
Frederick Douglass was a black man, very clever and daring! Bold
and persistent.

At age 18, he went off to Baltimore where he learned how
to caulk ships. He did all the work in the local shipywards
and all of his money went to his master.

And he wasn’t planning on being a slave forever. Our BLACK
race had to be like brick, strong tough and durable.

See, what he did was borrow the identity papers of a freed
slave.

Back in the day, free black people had to have free papers.
Ofcourse, they had to be refreshed. They even charged a
fee for this writing so the state could have money
rolling in.

The name, age, color, height and form of the freeman
were given in details, as well as scars or other
marks.

So the escaped slave could use another person’s identity
card and mail it back to the owner.

And you know, he had to dress the part.
Douglass was dressed as a sailor. He arranged with
Isaac Rolls to bring his bags to the Philadelphia
train. He didn’t want to go in person to buy
the ticket so he could avoid an arrest.

Then the conductor came to the car full of black
peoples. He collected tickets and
examined the papers of his black passengers.
This was one of the flipped coin moments.
He could either be found out or slide on by.

He had a paper with the American eagle on it.
So, can we all agree that the American eagle
is an important symbol to the freedom of
Black people? It was representing the freedom
of Douglass, a black man.

The conductor did a quick glance at his paper.
He was still in Maryland, and could have
been arrested despite the conductor not
carefully inspecting his freedom paper.

Next stop-Delaware! This was another slave state.
The borderlines in between slavery and freedom
were typically the most risque for fugitives.

He arrived in New York, what most people call
the BIG APPLE. WHen he got there, he just
wore clothes of a laborer. He asked if
he could bring and put away coal. The lady
gave him two silver half-dollars. Finally,
he got his own EARNED money. No master,
to swoop in and make profits off him!
A free man!

You gotta do what you gotta do to be free!
I’m happy his way worked.
Yet,SOME people say that black
people are lazy. IF white people go back into
history and see what we did while they
sat back, and woof down food and watch
our people work, they couldn’t argue!
They’d be going in circles. Still today,
though black people are achieving.
BUt yes all people should know that
black people are NOT lazy, but for
those who DON”T know we simply
can’t argue with a FOOL.

Henry Box Brown- Black man mailed himself to freedom!

Henry Box Brown- Black man mailed himself to freedom!

The Resurrection of Henry “Box” Brown at Philadelphia; L. Rosenthal; lithograph print; circa 1854

What’s thing some people would kill for? Freedom.
No one should be enslaved and the individuals who invented
slavery are ludicrious.

Henry Box Brown escaped slavery in Virginia with the assistance
of black and white people opposing slavery. This occured
in 1849.

The box was marked with words “this side up with care”. They
didn’t want him to be hurt because you know how ruff they
are with packages. Why not treat all packages with care?
That says professionalism to me.

Henry got him some water, some biscuits, a tool to make air holes,
hopped into the box. The man nailed the top down, and porters
took the box to the cars.

the conditions of the box were horrific. It was
tightly cramped and the book talks about the positions
Henry Box Brown was in.
Henry’s back and head were down. Imagine what it would be
like for a regular person, then a claustrophobic.

That’s just a little bit. Read the book and it talks about
how his family was sold off. It talks about how the master
wanted to pass him down to his son, like he was a
collectable. IT goes into detail on how he had to injure
himself to escape. It’s better detailed. And
what a way to get out of dodge! The book is a real treat
for those interested in Black History. Black History does not
have a certain time or certain place. It’s everyday.

Oh by the way, did you learn about him in your Black History
Class? Does your school have a black history major?
Mine does not and that just means we need to clean up
shop! Do your children know their history? Let me know
and thank you reading a piece of history!

Well, here’s what I learned about Mass COmmunications in the form of a Sample Resume!

Well, here’s what I learned about Mass COmmunications in the form of a Sample Resume!

Microphone

Mass Communications is one of the most interesting careers
a person could have. Oh yes! According to me, charismaallover.
Why? Because I’m a writer and I like to communicate in many
different aspects as you can see. I’m always trying to
get a message out. There’s so many careers in the world I would never
do and one that would make my day to get involved in–Mass
Communications.

I was talking with my brother. He’s always checking up on me.
He was asking me did I know that there are people with college
degrees not able to get into their field of study? I said why?
He replied ” Sometimes a degree is not enough. You have
to have additional skills”. Well, I guess they don’t want
to make it easy on people. They don’t want people
to just think that they can just get skills in one
aspect. I’m always thinking about the topics
that are helpful, entertaining and information.
But back to my brother, he suggested I look
up sample career resumes.

So I looked up the Mass COmmunications Resume

The sample resume showed a high gpa for the major and
that the person was in the Public Relations Student Society
of AMerica.

THey had achieved a 4th year level of Spanish conversation
and literature knowledge.

I was told that knowing a foreign language really helps when you
want to get hired for a job.

They created their own personal website.
They created a brochure for a well known organization.
THen they interviewed people, wrote a copy of
the organization key concepts of fun, diversity
and communication.

Producing fliers, posters, newspaper ads, annual brochures
for campus wide distribution was on the list of things this
person did. This person publicized monthly social and
educational meetings.

This person talked about awards, rewards they received.

Skills listed was adobe photoshop, quarkexpress, html,
Excel, Powerpoint, Word.

Digital 35 mm, video photography

Associated Press style, proofreading,
editing text from multiple contributors into whole

A Good amount of spoken and written Spanish

Well, I see what this person has for extra skills. Me personally, I want
to obtain those same skills. I only know a little of MS Word, Powerpoint,
Excel, it’s all basic. I would like to learn more. I myself know high school
Spanish and College French. The college I would like to attend has
a 4th level of French and Spanish. I’ve always wondered how could
I be fluent in those languages. But anyone looking to learn foreign
languages can get easy translation from http://www.babelfish.com/
They have multiple languages, more than Spanish and French.

Praise Dance at Bethel Gospel Assembly Church in New YOrk, a spot to check out when you are in New York!

Praise Dance at Bethel Gospel Assembly Church in New YOrk, a spot to check out when you are in New York!

Pressure Point Praise Dancers

(The following picture is not a picture of the praise dancers at Bethel Gospel Assembly)

BEthel Gospel Assembly, A Pentecostal Church in Harlem showing off their praise dance

There’s nothing more glorious than dancing for the Lord. It looks
like it would be very rewarding on the inside. The church I attend
is Greater Works Deliverance Ministries in Romulus Michigan.

They have praise dancers. We can all see the spirit behind the dancing. You just feel it, like you feel a strong that evokes emotion. One of the most emotional Gospel songsis Thank you Lord. How would someone praise dance to that? There’s a lot of great songs to praise dance to.

But I would just like to turn your attention to this Black church
in New York. The atmosphere they set up:
Teenage ballerinas and midraff baring hip hoppers gather together
in the halls of the New Dance Group building in Midtown Manhattan.
In this group you will see twenty five women bowed on their knews
in circle position, eyes closed, foreheads to the floor.

Wendy Heagy, the founder of Raise Him Up Praise Dance School and Ministry leads the group in prayer. The class is mostly our Black people from ages 20 to mid 60s, dressed up in warm up clothes and have scriptures written on the backs of their T-shirts.We all know they had to go in and out with style.

Ms. Heagy starts by leading with a secular warm up of head rolls with feet
in parallel second position. The upbeat jazz version of the Lord’s Prayer
accompanies their dance ministry on the stereo. Ms. Heagy is both
soothing and demanding as a teacher. Her requests are to pull in your
stomach and squeeze your butt.

Praise dance is deep, and a form of worshippng God that seeks to articulate the word and spirit of God by using the body. Even in biblical times, dancing was embraced during festivals and worships. Unfortunately,
it was forced out of the Christian church at the Reformation era
and has been welcomed back in the 20 of so past years. So that’s a
little history for you.

Fact: In recent years, praise dance has become a very popular part
of church services across the country, especially among America’s
growing Pentecostal movement and has been taken to New York too.
Note:1 in 10 people in New York is pentecostal anyways.

A lot of praise dance ministries include American sign language
to sign out scripture during a song.

In New York, many many churches have added praise movement
ministries to their worship services such as the Greater Allen A.M.E
Cathedral in Jamaica QUeens. It is a powerful dance ministry with over
400 dancers, along with other churches in or close to the city like
Mount Calvary Holy Church on State Island, City Gate International
Church in East Harlem, Perfecting Faith Church in Freeport on Long
Island and Bibleway Healing Assembly in upstate Henrietta. So…
if you visiting the New York area, something to think about.

Ms.Heady’s Choreography is blend of modern, African and jazz movement
that comes through prayer.

THe church dances to the song “He’s Been Faithful” by the Christiansinger Vicki Yohe to represent blessing, honor, glory, power,
wisdom, and dominion. At the cue of blessing, both hands start at the mouth and the arms then fan out in
a sun shape. At the cue of power, arms areraised equal distance apart with fists clenched. For wisdom, fingers touch the temple and come to
meet in the center.

So when people praise dance it’s a representation of a theme.
It can be many themes. What do you interpret from praise
dancing?

Would you ever praise dance? I wish I could praise dance. I know I could with practice. Praise dance to me
is like a spirit and an attitude. What do you get from it?

The facial expressions of the people in my church are so
intense. It’s like they are one with God in the dance.Praise dance is body and spirit. The body feels the spirit in the praise dance. You could feel like your
jogging through time through a spiritual journey.

I remember even imitating some moves of praisedance I saw in videos and got a good feel of it.I was thinking wow, it’s very impressive and
magnificent.

The rolled up twists vs. the scarf look!

rolled twists

Basically for the first hairstyle ,all I did was twist my hair, pin it up for an updo. Then I took rollers and rolled the twists forward.

For the scarf look I just tied it around the edges neatly and evenly. Then I made it into a bow.

UNCF students need a emergency donation so they can continue to attend college!

UNCF students need a emergency donation so they can continue to attend college!

United Negro College Fund

Please help keep thousands of students at UNCF member institutions to
continue their time in college. They are struggling to pay off their bills and
complete their courses. Therefore they must raise $5 million to help them.

IF these students don't get help really soon, these students will have racked
up large debts and have no degree.

THe economic downturn is deeply effecting college students. Colleges all
over the country are reporting that thousands of students are in jeopardy
out of school this semester. They will not be able to return in the fall.
For a lot of them, loans are not made readily available in this credit crunch,
federal financial aid is only so much and many parents lost their jobs
because of downsizing.

If you care and have the money, you can help them.

The short video clip of me doing Taebo on youtube!! Plus the picture to go with it!

The short video clip of me doing Taebo on youtube!! Plus the picture to go with it!

Like I said, I love some taebo. I’m still
doing it everyday as usual, same taebo tape till I get another one. Well, I just put up a small short video clip of me
doing 2 taebo moves and various poses.

I did this outside of my aunt’s
house in the back. It was so sunny
out, that’s why the video looks so
bright. Just to recap, I lost about 30
pounds doing taebo. Taebo, with all
the kicks and jumps rocks the house.
But it’s the best fitness routine for
me. I increased the amount of squats
involved in taebo that I do. I increased
the kicks, the leg lifts, the jumps, etc
by doing five sets of each.

Anyways here is the picture
to go with the video..

Worship You, my Lord, until the very end
Worship You, my Lord, until the very end
Worship You, my Lord, until the very end
Worship You, my Lord, until the very end

Jesus, lover of my soul
Jesus, I will never let You go
You've taken me from the miry clay
Set my feet upon the rock and now I know

I love You, I need You
Though my world may fall, I'll never let You go
My Savior, my closest friend
I will worship You until the very end

Jesus, lover of my soul
Jesus, I will never let you go
You've taken me from the miry clay
Set my feet upon the rock and now I know
