The first Black person hired at AT&T for Bell Laboratories!

bell

What an honor it is to have a jobwhen employment is high in some places

and you have to be trained for these

jobs, even the simple ones. What a bigger

and Better blessing it is to have a career.

To have a career at Bell Laboratories

must be an honor as a big as a mansion.

One of my quotes about careers is that

” I’m not working to a point, I’m going

beyond points.” And so I have a particular

person in mind. THat is:

A Black man named Dr. Hawkins was the

first Black person hired as a part of the

technical staff for AT&T’s Bell laboratories.

He has held 18 patents for the United States and

129 patents from foreign countries.

One of his most important inventions in

the 1940s were additives that gave a long life

to plastic coatins for shielding wire cables.

But before his invention, wires were coated with

lead and that was very costly, heavy and unwieldly.

He and his co-inventor VIncent Lanza

discovered anti-oxidizing agents that

gave plastic a life span of 70 years.
